The O2 is a cavernous music venue housed in a refurbished bingo hall. The venue hosts rock and pop acts as well as popular weekly club nights. The club opened its doors in 2005 following a £4 million refurbishment, with Sunderland noiseniks The Futureheads kickstarting the celebrations. The two-level auditorium has a capacity of almost 2,000, with a mixture of standing and seating. There’s also the 400 capacity O2 Academy2, a standalone gig venue which also acts as a second room for club nights and dance events. It’s perfect for showcasing new talent from the local area and breaking new acts on the touring circuit. O2 Academy Newcastle is also home to the city's biggest student party on a Friday night, whilst the weekend satisfies fans of alternative sounds, with a mash up new tunes and classic tracks from across the rock, metal and punk spectrum.
